Japan-based logistics firm, SBS Holdings is buying 80% stake in Bangalore-based Atlas Logistics Pvt Ltd, for around Rs.150 Cr.

With this deal, SBS Holdings has got into the freight forwarding business in India.

Kotak Investment advised SBS Holdings while KPMG advised Atlas Logistics on the deal.

Incorporated in 1999 and promoted by Y M Sachdeva and Venkatesh Rao, Atlas Logistics provides logistics solutions services, including freight forwarding, customs clearance and warehousing.

It has 26 offices across India, and ten offices overseas.

It posted a net loss of Rs.3.66 Cr on net sales of Rs.140 Cr for 2009-10, against a net profit of Rs.2.42 Cr on net sales of Rs.180 Cr for 2008-09.

This is the third deal by a Japanese company in the Indian logistics space after Hitachi's unit Hitachi Transport System Ltd bought Flyjac Logistics Pvt Ltd for Rs 250 Crand Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) picked up about 26% stake in Tata Steel's subsidiary TM International last year.

Founded in 1987, SBS Holdings provides business infrastructure services and specialises in land transportation services.

While global players are keen to enter Indian logistics space, there are Indian firms like Aqua Logistics looking to expand thier business, both domestically and globally through organic and inorganic route. Last year, it acquired three Hongkong-based companies - CIT Logistics Ltd, TAG Logistics Ltd and AGI Logistics, while in the domestic market, it acquired Chennai-based Star Distribution Logistics Pvt Ltd and Bangalore-based Nikkos Logistics Pvt Ltd.
